The Journal - All Things Related Hunting and Fishing

July 16, 2019
It has been a while since I have added to this.  Much has happened that I will list but not elaborate on.

Turkey Hunted Kansas - The trip was awesome in wide open spaces.  Hunted WIHA's. Didn't get a turkey but still happy about the trip.  Worth it.

Missed my tag draw for Kansas, there was a technical error and I was never offered the opportunity online as a non-resident.  The system treated me like a resident so I didn't get non-resident options nor was I looking for resident options. Had to wait until leftovers became available of which all were taken.

Fished South Mountain State Park on the opener of delayed harvest.  Not nearly as many fish this year.  I suspect that the drought and hot weather we had so early pushed the stocked trout further downstream.  My wife and I only caught a single fisherman's limit.  We returned in July and caught zero and saw zero.

Set up a small fishing boat for trot lines and fishing on our NC mountain lakes, not these green/brown heavily sediment polluted waters around my home base. It has been so dreadfully hot these past few years that it is hard to get out and enjoy the outdoors because of the heat and humidity.  Feeling more heat intolerant and I get older and an increasing number of days over 90 each year (humility over 80%) makes me long for the mountains.

Back on the 15th I met with a NC Wildlife Biologist on our private land to help improve the property for both financial use and for wildlife, a balance that if great for a hunter who also finds a need to make money off of a property.  I will be detailing what I will be doing in the coming months for food plots, old field management and tree growth.

March 6,
On the 28th of February, I trapped a raccoon.  It was the last day of the trapping season so I took it as a chance to tan a coon hide.  After rigging up a quick skinning gambrel in the garage, I skinned it out fairly.  It was then placed on a board I cut to be approximately the sizes specified by NAFA for raccoons.  Being specific isn't a big issue with the size since the hid is for me.

Worked on making a few jigs for the turkey call box.  Should help me reproduce the more complicated cuts easier with no measuring.  Thinking of calling it the Creepy Caller!

After several days of rain and cold, the weather turned worm but it was windy.  Some gust showed to be in the 40's when I checked later online.  Got up in the tree stand and shot at 30 yards and 20 yards from different angles.  The tree, a 36 inch diameter pine, was swaying in the wind and the branches blocking my shot periodically.  Had decent results but my sites may be a little to the left.  My cluster of 5 arrows at 30 yards was 8" but at 20 was 4".
I relocated the target to different angles and at one angle a branch acted as a rest for my draw arm.  It stabilized my bow are tremendously.

Spent some time milling wood for Turkey Call boxes with a new saw blade.   I don't know why I torture my self and my table saw motor by trying to make my blades last as long as possible.
I am trying to figure out a way to make the turkey call boxes faster.  I also need to pay attention to the grain direction on the sides because now that I have made a good number of them, about 30 percent of them have "bad" spots on the call that just doesn't sound right.  I am working on ideas to help with the special cuts of 5 degrees to make it more consistent and safer to perform.

February 19, 2019 - The Beginning
My Wife and I have been reading the Journal of a Trapper by Russel Osborn written between the years of 1835 and 1848.  I read aloud to her almost nightly while she listens and drifts off into sleep taking the stories into her dreams. We try to track Mr. Osborn's travels on Google Earth by scrolling and scanning the areas he is describing.  His journal is very interesting to understand how life was so different not even 200 years ago.  We have read a few book aloud like this of the same era and area, the last being Across the Plains in the Donner Party: A Personal Narrative of the Overland Trip to California.  It is an enjoyable time we spend together that in times past, was how we were entertained without technology.
Because of his journal and all the sporadic things I do that are hunting and fishing related I have decided to begin to track the things I do so that I can look back at them later.  Not sure if I will keep it up or be completely coherent or interesting at times, but we will see.
I only plan on writing about my actions and not my "thoughts", I think there is to much of that, to much banter, not enough action.
