Building a wooden tree stand comes with a few challenges that need to be addresses from the beginning.
1. Will it be safe?
2. Will it rot?
3. Can it be portable?
4. Can it be installed without power?
Number one and two to me are the most important. I have been hunting from a stand my uncle built years ago out of Pressure Treated (PT) 2x4's, 1x4's and a sheet of plywood. It has done it's job but as it has been aging and becoming an unsafe platform to hunt from.
I looked at methods of construction that can improve its safety and longevity.
Number three and four require construction methods that require most of the fabrication done at home or in the shop where power is available and then will only use the power from battery powered tools when the tree stand is being installed.
My solution was to construct two ladders with inset PT 2x4 rungs set in PT 2x6’s. These two ladders would be fastened together with an outer PT 2x6 that has been through-bolted with galvanized bolts and staggered to provide support to a top and bottom ladder. When fastened together, the ladder will be 16’ tall and solidly support any willing hunter.
Below is the Build Video. Plans and a Material List to come.
