Creepy Quick Tip - March 1, 2018 - DIY Hunting Blind

DIY Hunting Blind with Supports

Disguising yourself to animals you wish to harvest or observe doesn't have to be an expensive process to be effective.  This is one way I have added to my options for venturing into the woods, with a quick and light set up for wild turkey or other game I wish to hunt from the ground. It can be manipulated to conceal you in a variety of conditions and is easy to set up and dismantle for multiple locations in one hunt.

Materials you need:
1. Some type of lightweight camo sheeting
2. Driveway Markers
3. Brown, Green or Camo Duct Tape (Similar Color Paint will work)
4. Small Bungies
5. Dowels or small blocks of wood

Tools Needed:
1. Small Handsaw
2. Drill and Drill Bit the Same Diameter as the Driveway Marker

Orange Fiberglass Driveway Markers
Often you can pick up a sheer camo blind sheet for just a few dollars on clearance at the end of the big game season at a number of hunting or department stores or just find some dark shape disrupting fabric that will help blend you into your ground location.  I have three separate fabric options; sheer camo, opaque camo pattern and woven see-through fabric with camo print for varying surroundings and situations.  When you have one or several then you need a way to hang it in front of and around you while making it mobile and portable.

I go pick up a few driveway markers from the local home store for a few bucks.  The basic fiberglass driveway marker shown in the photo is lightwieght, easy to cut and just a few dollars a piece.  I cut them into shorter lengths to make them easy to pack into the woods and fit in my pack.  After I cut them, I will join them with the hardwood dowel.

I use small 5 inch sections of hardwood dowels that are about twice the diameter of the driveway markers and drill holes into the end so that the driveway marker fits snugly into the drilled hole.
They holes can be drilled into square blocks if you have some scraps laying around, I prefer the dowels for ergonomics and how it rolls up in the final package.  You can see that a hole has been drilled into the dowel in the photo.

I happened to have some realtree duct tape and used it to cover the orange where they are exposed between the ground and the dowels but another dark color or paint will work fine.

The dowels also act like a handle that you can use for leverage when you stick them into the ground by giving you a wider surface to push down on and the pointed and of the driveway marker makes this easy to penetrate the surface of the ground.  Obviously roots, rock and hard surfaces will pose an obstacle for this so choose a location for the marker accordingly..

Once you have inserted the bottom section of the driveway marker into the ground, slide the second or third sections on top (depending on your length preferences and secure the blind fabric with the budgie by hooking it or wrapping it around the top of the driveway marker and the corner of the fabric.

Securing the Fabric

Place each marker pole in the ground in an arrangement to conceal yourself for each location.  You can see a basic set up of this blind in this photo.

When you are done at that hunting spot, packing up is easy. Dissemble everything but keep the dowels on the bottom portion of the pole, Fold the fabric long ways one time, place the marker poles in the fold of the fabric and roll it up neatly and tightly.  Then use the bungie cords to secure the bundle before sliding into your pack.

Easy to make, inexpensive and useful in many locations.
