Creepy Quick Tip - March 26, 2018 - Clean Mouth Calls

Turkey hunting requires a number of calls you carry with you to try and reverse the laws of nature and convince a large Tom to strut your way.  Amongst those calls, mouth calls can be used for your entire range of calls or just to extend the neck of a bearded turkey that is within range and your shotgun bead or top pin is affixed on the kill zone.

In either case, storing the mouth call when not in use can create some problems.

Problem #1: Drying out - The thin latex on the calls can dry out quickly and not function as well when they are in and out of your mouth.

Problem #2: Bacteria! - Yuck mouth after a eating a power bar and drinking coffee in the truck before heading out into the woods can make some calls turn into nasty germ carrying wafers.  They also can save a cold virus and get you sick at a later date.

Solution:  Find a wide mouth watertight container like this single serving thermos container to hold your mouth calls in when they are not in your mouth.  Place a small amount of non-chlorinated water and an equal amount of mouthwash in it.  Then, when you grab your mouth call it is both minty fresh and free of germs that can grow on the call or save you from placing any undesirable nastiness into your mouth from things you have touched in the woods.

The wide mouth is an essential part of this solution because it allows you to reach in easily to get the call and not require you to tilt the container over and do some index/middle finger scissor dance to grasp your calls.

The watertight lid allows you to throw it in your pack and transport the germ killing lubricating liquid around without hassle.

I have also noticed that my camouflage face mask smells better at the end of the day and requires less washing.

So, next time you head out to call in some turkey, give this Creepy Quick Tip a try, if you hunt with a buddy, at least do it for their sake.
